Who doesn’t love a good friendly, competitive rivalry?
The men’s golf teams at Arizona and Arizona State will compete in the Copper Cup, a two-day, four-round match, at Ak-Chin Southern Dunes Golf Club in Maricopa, Jan. 17-18, 2021.
The format is simple. On the first day, teams will play four four-ball matches in the morning, followed by eight singles matches in the afternoon. On day two, teams play four foursomes matches and eight more singles

On Jan. 18, teams will play four foursomes matches in the morning with eight more singles matches to finish. It’s one point per-match, with ties equaling a half-point. Twenty-four points total, meaning 12.5 is the lucky number to win.
“The Copper Cup will be the first college golf tournament of the spring and a great way to celebrate the Territorial Cup rivalry and the very high level of college golf found in Arizona,” Sun Devils head coach Matt Thurmond said via a release. “I’m thankful for Ak-Chin Southern Dunes and the two athletics departments that have worked together to support this idea and make it happen. Some great golf and and camaraderie can be expected.”
“Our team could not be more excited for the opportunity to open up the season in Arizona playing our rivals in a very recognizable Ryder Cup style format,” Arizona head coach Jim Anderson said. “The pandemic has challenged us all in many ways, and I believe The Copper Cup is a gift coming from the resiliency and persistence our teams face during the challenges.
